Being a healthy developer

One thing I have noticed over the years is the amount of laziness that comes with sitting at my desk all day being a nerd. I have found that it really isn’t all that healthy, and I have been working to overcome that. I have found that getting up and walking around often has really helped me from becoming so stagnant. I am 6′3″ and weigh about 260. I am not grossly overweight, but I know I could use a swift kick in the butt.

So… like many others I made a new years resolution to start working out more and be a better eater. I have found that starting that resolution before the new year made the transition much easier. I see too many people go cold turkey, and that just ain’t for me. So how did I do it? Well, I started with a plan. Every good accomplishment most likely had a plan.

Workout:
Working out has always been something that has been easy for me. I don’t get sore easily no matter how hard I work out so that was my natural choice to start with. 3 times a week Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It seemed pretty simple, but then I ran into some problems. I am a weekend freak. I hate sitting around, so I always need to be up and doing something active. Sundays this time of year are my snowboarding days which means I go hard all day. Mondays I am worthless because of being drained from the day before. Again, I am not really sore, just tired. So the workout schedule is not Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. I will hit Mondays if the weekend allowed for it, just not too often anymore.

Eating:
I will not eat lima beans and brussel sprouts to lose fat, although I do like them. I believe the reason we have taste buds is to use them. Therefore pizza, beer and Mexican food are for me. I have just learned moderation is key. My first step for eating was my breakfast. I always eat it, but I always order the wrong meal to start off the day. I have been eating “power breakfasts” now and the difference is amazing. During the day I am much more clear and I am not so hungry for lunch.

That brings me to lunch. We have the most amazing cafeteria here at work. You can order anything and they always make it fresh. They have a salad bar, potato bar, daily soups and specials. The problem with that is you can go overboard and eat horribly non-stop for little cha-ching. My solution was to look for other alternatives that were just as good but not so tolling on me in the long run. That said, I don’t have to be so strict that if they have meatloaf for lunch I have to get a salad… I dig the meatloaf.

And finally dinner. Let’s not go there for a few more weeks. I seem to never get this one right, but it is a work in progress.

Conclusion:
Simple: Start off at a pace you can handle. Mix it up and you will be much more successful. It really has worked well for me.

Matt
